Make Money Online as a UK Student: 10 Ways That Fit Around Lectures, With an AI Agent
How to make money online as a student in the UK in 2026: ten ways that fit around lectures and exams, what each pays, the hours a week they take, how a free AI agent does the setup and admin, the rules on Student visas and self-employment, the trading allowance, student loan thresholds, and a term-time plan.

The maintenance loan arrived in September and it is not going to last until January. The bar job pays £12 an hour for shifts that land on the night before a deadline. Somewhere in between there is a laptop, a lot of knowledge nobody is paying for yet, and the suspicion that other students have worked something out.
Some have. This guide covers ten ways to make money online as a student in the UK that fit around lectures, with what each pays, the hours it takes in a normal week, and how a free AI agent does the profile, the listings, the drafts and the invoices so the hours go on earning rather than admin. It also covers the three rules students most often get wrong: what a Student visa allows, when the trading allowance runs out, and what a student loan does and does not take. Rules were checked on GOV.UK on 12 October 2026.
The profile, the website and the agent are free, and jobs arrive already briefed. Create a free Jobbit Pro profile: 300 free agent credits on sign-up plus 100 free credits every day, a website for your services once your profile is complete, and no fee until a paid job completes.
How we judged
- Fits around a timetable. Work you can do at 10pm on a Tuesday or in a free afternoon, not shifts someone else sets.
- Pays more than the bar. Everything here beats £12 an hour once the first customer is found.
- Uses what a student already has. Recent exam knowledge, languages, a laptop, a phone camera, time in the holidays.
- Prices from our tables. Rates come from our guides to freelance day rates and the best side hustles ranked by hourly pay.
Read this first if you are on a Student visa
GOV.UK's Student visa rules say you cannot be self-employed, and the visa conditions set out by universities add that this includes freelance work. Term-time work is capped, typically at 20 hours a week for degree-level courses, and it must be employed work, not your own business. If you are on a Student visa, the ways below that involve selling your own services are not open to you; a part-time employed job is. Check the GOV.UK Student visa page and your university's advice before you earn a pound. The rest of this guide is for home students and anyone whose immigration status allows self-employment.
10 ways to make money online as a student
| # | The way | What it pays | Hours a week | The agent does | Fits around lectures because |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Tutoring GCSE and A-level subjects | £25 to £45 an hour | 3 to 8 | Lesson plans, worksheets, scheduling, invoices | Evenings and weekends, online |
| 2 | Product listings for online sellers | £3 to £5 a listing | 3 to 6 | Writes listings from photos | Any hour, any device |
| 3 | Research briefs for small firms | £25 to £50 an hour | 2 to 6 | Searches, reads, drafts with sources | Done in a library slot |
| 4 | Translation checks | £60 to £150 a document | 2 to 5 | Drafts; you check as a native speaker | Deadline-based, not shift-based |
| 5 | End-of-tenancy cleans and moves | £15 to £30 an hour | 4 to 10 in the holidays | Bookings, quotes, reminders | Busiest exactly when term ends |
| 6 | Social posts for local cafes and shops | £100 to £250 a month per client | 2 to 4 | Drafts posts from the owner's photos | Scheduled a week ahead |
| 7 | Transcripts and minutes for researchers | £1 to £2 a recorded minute | 2 to 6 | Transcribes, drafts minutes | Earphones in the library |
| 8 | Websites for societies and local shops | £300 to £600 a site | 4 to 8 per site | Builds, writes and hosts | One afternoon of checking |
| 9 | Notes, revision packs and past-paper guides | £5 to £30 a pack | 2 to 5 | Structures and formats your own notes | Made once, sold many times |
| 10 | Briefed jobs on Jobbit Pro | Set per job | As many as you accept | Brings the brief, drafts, invoices | You choose which to take |
Two of these deserve a warning. Way 9 only works with your own notes and your own words; selling a lecturer's slides or a textbook's pages is a copyright problem and most universities treat uploading coursework as misconduct. Way 1 is the best-paid hour on the list for a student with recent exams, because parents pay for the exam you just passed, not for a teaching qualification.
The three in detail that students ask about most
Tutoring: the best hour on the list
A second-year with an A in A-level maths is exactly who a Year 11 parent wants at £25 to £45 an hour. The agent writes the lesson plan from the exam board's topics, produces the worksheet and the mark scheme, keeps the diary and raises the invoice; you teach, online, from your room. Three pupils a week in term time is a few hundred pounds a month for three evenings, and most parents stay until the exam.
Websites for societies and local shops
Every society needs a page with the events and a sign-up form, and every cafe near campus has a Facebook page and no website. The agent builds the site, writes it and hosts it on a £7 a month plan the customer pays; you gather the facts and check them. Societies pay from their budget, shops from the till, and one finished site becomes the sample for the next. Our guide to what a website costs a UK small business shows why £300 to £600 is an easy yes.
Briefed jobs on Jobbit Pro
On Jobbit Pro customers and Jobbit's agent send briefed, scoped jobs to professionals, and the customer's payment is held in escrow before you start. For a student this solves the hardest part, which is finding the first customer without a track record: the job arrives with the brief written, you accept the ones that fit the week, and the review builds the profile for the next.
Student loans, tax and the trading allowance
- The trading allowance. GOV.UK lets you earn up to £1,000 of trading income in a tax year without telling HMRC. Above it, register for Self Assessment by 5 October in the following tax year.
- Income Tax. The personal allowance is £12,570 for the 2026 to 2027 tax year, so a student earning a few thousand pounds a year from these ways pays no Income Tax and, below the same threshold, no Class 4 National Insurance. Our guide to self-employed tax at 12 income levels has the sums above that.
- Student loans. Repayments start only above the threshold for your plan: GOV.UK lists £29,385 a year for Plan 2 and £25,000 for Plan 5, at 9% of income above the line, and self-employed income is assessed through Self Assessment. Earning from the ways above while you study will not trigger repayments at these levels.
- Platform reporting. Resale and freelance platforms report sellers with 30 or more sales or about £1,700 in a calendar year to HMRC. Keep your own records; a report is not a tax bill.
- Your course. Check the student handbook for rules on work during placements or funded research, and never sell coursework.
A term-time rhythm that works
- Freshers' week: create your Jobbit Pro profile, let the agent draft it from your subject and one skill, and complete it so the website is live.
- Weeks 2 to 4: pick one way from the table, make one sample with the agent, and tell twenty people: the society group chat, the course group, the parents' network at home.
- Weeks 5 to 10: keep it to one or two fixed slots a week. The agent handles the enquiries, the bookings and the invoices in between.
- Reading week and the holidays: the end-of-tenancy and moving work, and the websites, which need afternoons rather than hours.
- Exam term: pause everything except the tutoring you have promised. The agent sends the "back in June" message to everyone else.
How a free AI agent helps a student earn
ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Manus and Meta's Muse will all draft a lesson plan or a listing. An agent connected to your profile, your jobs and your payments does the whole admin layer.
- Writes the profile and the website from your subject and one skill, under your name or a business name.
- Produces the lesson plans, listings, drafts and transcripts so your hours go on the paid part.
- Brings the first jobs. On Jobbit Pro customers and Jobbit's agent send briefed, scoped jobs to professionals, and the customer's payment is held in escrow before you start.
- Free agent credits from the first day. A new account gets a 300-credit sign-up bonus on top of 100 free credits every day, with no card.
- A website when your profile is complete. Finish your Jobbit Pro profile and you get a website for your services with an enquiry form.
- Keeps the books for the day your trading income passes £1,000. Our guide to AI for students covers the study side of the same agent.
Your first week
- Day 1: check your visa position and your course rules, then pick one way from the table.
- Day 2: create your Jobbit Pro profile and let the agent draft it.
- Day 3: complete the profile so the website is live, and make one sample with the agent.
- Day 4: send twenty messages, drafted by the agent, to people who already know you.
- Day 5: take the first booking or briefed job, deliver it well, and ask for the review.
Frequently asked questions
How can a student make money online in the UK?
Tutoring the exams you just passed, writing listings for online sellers, research briefs, translation checks, social posts for local shops, transcripts, websites for societies and shops, revision packs from your own notes, and briefed jobs on Jobbit Pro. All fit around a timetable and pay more than a bar shift.
Can international students make money online in the UK?
Not through self-employment or freelancing on a Student visa: GOV.UK says Student visa holders cannot be self-employed, and term-time employed work is capped, typically at 20 hours a week for degree-level courses. Check GOV.UK and your university before earning anything.
Do students pay tax on money made online?
Trading income up to £1,000 a tax year is covered by the trading allowance. Above that you register for Self Assessment, but with a personal allowance of £12,570 most students pay no Income Tax on part-time earnings.
Will making money affect my student loan?
Repayments only start above your plan's threshold, £29,385 a year for Plan 2 and £25,000 for Plan 5, and self-employed income is assessed through Self Assessment. Part-time earnings while studying will not reach it.
What is the best-paid way for a student?
Tutoring at £25 to £45 an hour for recent exam knowledge, and websites for societies and local shops at £300 to £600 a site with the agent doing the build.
Can I sell my lecture notes?
Only your own notes in your own words, and check your course rules first. Selling a lecturer's slides or a textbook's pages is a copyright problem, and uploading coursework is treated as misconduct by most universities.
